The Summer Is Hot. We're Turning Up the Heat on BLM It is a scorching summer on the range, in the courts and the halls of Congress. We are turning up the heat right back. On the heels of our court victory that pulled Carter Reservoir, Buckhorn and Coppersmith off the roundup schedule, we took the fight straight into the Callaghan Complex, where we have active litigation to protect the thousands of wild horses still living in that 1.1 million acre landscape even after the roundup. We were the only ones who stayed onsite from day one until the last horse ran into the trap. That matters. Because what we documented, no one else was there to see. What we saw speaks volumes. | |
Callaghan: What Happened, and What Comes Next BLM shut the operation down on day 17 of a 53-day plan. The official tally: 2,005 wild horses captured, 1,992 shipped to holding, 11 dead. Six of the eight acute deaths were foals, including a filly who died of "unknown causes" on the final day. There was no veterinarian onsite for the entire operation. Not at the trap. Not at the temporary corrals. No necropsies. And deaths first waved off as unrelated or "chronic" were only changed after we pressed. The underlying lawsuit continues and briefing is active. FOIA and discovery come next, because we still do not have honest accounting of the roundup and far from adequate accountability in the underlying plan. | While the helicopters were still flying, BLM quietly opened a 30-day comment period on another expansion of Nevada Gold Mines' Cortez operation in Crescent Valley — the Cortez Pit Expansion Project (DOI-BLM-NV-B010-2026-0021-DNA).
