Dear friends,

BREAKING NEWS from federal court for the Carter, Buckhorn, and Coppersmith wild horses.

Today, the judge declined to narrow the lawsuit brought by Wild Horse Education and Carter Reservoir Mustangs, Inc., challenging the wild horse removal plan and the decades‑old decisions it is built on after BLM filed a Motion to Dismiss.

This means our full case is moving forward into the Preliminary Injunction phase — not just the 2025 removal schedule, but the underlying framework dating back to the 1980s that set this crisis in motion!

This ruling gives us a critical opportunity: we can now ask the court to pause all planned removals and related actions while the case proceeds. For Carter in particular, that means a chance to stop plans that would push the herd toward functional extinction at just 25 wild horses. But our case is not limited to "can BLM do roundups or not." This groundbreaking opportunity allows us to show how all planning, from the 1980s forward, stacks up to culminate in functional extinction for a herd like Carter based on nothing but agreements and zero data or science anywhere along the way!

Between now and May 8, our team will be working late into the night to prepare a comprehensive Preliminary Injunction motion. We’ll be drawing on decades of field documentation, range research, and legal preparation to tell the full story of what these herds have endured — and why the law does not allow the agency to keep relying on outdated, unsupported decisions to justify today’s removals.

We are incredibly grateful to have this opening to stand up for Carter, Buckhorn, and Coppersmith in court. It is a direct result of years of work, and of your support that makes that work possible.

You can read the full update and deeper legal breakdown HERE.

Thank you for standing with these wild horses at this critical moment.

With gratitude.
